Voiceover Timing

One of the most common problems I - and I suspect most other voiceover artists - encounter is when I receive a script that the client 'promises' is definitely within the specified timeframe, only for me to find that it's much longer when actually recorded. It happens every week!

The voiceover timing problems problem seems to stem from the fact that many people read the script 'in their head' when timing it rather than read it aloud. They also don't put the emotion and pauses into the read that a voiceover artist would. Both these will make the script seem quicker than it actually is.

As a basic rule of thumb, a minute of voiceover read at a medium pace should usually equate to around 150-160 words (depends on the complexity of the script obviously) but the only way to really check the length is to read it aloud and pretty much pretend you are a voice artist...so put in some emotion, emphasis and pauses. You can time yourself using a stopwatch app on your phone (very often your clock app will have a stopwatch built in).

Getting the voiceover timing right from moment you send a voiceover artist a script will save you and the artist a lot of hassle and potentially save you having to rewrite the script again!
